We strive to support healthy, sustainable lifestyles by producing the finest starter cultures that enable ordinary people to make a range of extraordinary, nutritious, and plastic-negative fermented foods, at home.

It all started with... healthier fermented vegetables!

Cutting Edge Cultures began with an entrepreneur, a cultured foods enthusiast, a microbiologist, and a belief that the status quo in probiotics needed to improve. The desire to do things right drove us to create a radically-improved starter culture. We’re firm believers in the idea that your gut microbiome is a key part of your overall health. We set out to make a starter culture to catalyze the natural lacto-fermentation process, and deliver more probiotic benefits, faster and safer than what was already on the market.

Vegetables for fermentation

When the drop in pH is too slow, it gives molds, yeast, and harmful microbes the chance to thrive. Along the way to a better culture, we faced some struggles. There are some things we just won’t do, like mess around with genetic codes or use animal by-products in our starter cultures. Finding alternatives took some time, but it was worth it.

If you’ve been actively fermenting for a while, you know that a quick vinegar marinade doesn’t offer the same benefits as rich, living lacto-fermentation. Every strain of probiotic bacteria has a vital role to play. At Cutting Edge Cultures, we make sure they work together harmoniously to improve gut health – not to mention the taste of your fermented veggies!

Unshakeable Starter Culture Standards

Using the latest research on probiotics and not swaying from our commitment to creating a vegan and non-GMO culture, we created a starter culture that offers a quicker pH drop than every competing starter culture we tested against. When it was time to taste-test our veggies -- ooh, yummy! The quick pH drop offered better-tasting fermented vegetables!

But wait, there's more!

From these humble beginnings with just our Cultured Veggies Starter, we heard from our customers that they wanted similar thinking and quality in other cultured/fermented food starters.

In fact, many of our customers nurture their microbiomes by making a range of fermented foods at home, and have recognized the great advantages over store-bought alternatives.

That led us to develop Easy Kefir – the easiest way to confidently make delicious kefir.

Following on from that success, our clients asked us to turn our focus to starters for making yogurt and other yogurt-like products, whether using dairy or non-dairy ingredients. The result was the launch of 3 superb new products of which we are very proud:

Prebiotics are such an important part of the culturing process that we responded to customer requests by creating Prebio Plus.

Now we are working on new cultured food starters that can de-mystify fermented foods and help our customers make better, healthier and more nutritious foods at home.
