What's fantastic and not plastic?

Plastic is prevalent in the fermented dairy aisle in the grocery store.

Most fermented dairy products, including yogurt and kefir, are sold in plastic pots and bottles.

Farther down the line, when each of these single-use containers is disposed of, much plastic waste is bound to occur.

Substantial energy had been used in the production and transportation of that single-use container that will soon literally go to waste.

Even on the occasion when yogurt and kefir are sold in glass, this glass container, much like plastic, will end up in a recycling facility, if lucky, or in a landfill.

There is an ethical dilemma here: How to consume nutritious fermented dairy without burdening the environment?

Our company, Cutting Edge Cultures, is mindful of this issue and puts considerable effort into helping its customers go greener and move beyond plastic.

We specialize in the production of the finest fermentation starter cultures for home use, to help you make a range of extraordinary homemade fermented foods, while reducing plastic waste.

We encourage our customers to adopt a sustainable, earth-respecting, environmentally-friendly vision and lifestyles, by fermenting their own delectable yogurt and kefir at home with our fermentation starter cultures. (And it's very affordable, too!)

Home fermentation reduces the use of plastic by following these principles:

  • You use your own jars.
  • You use your own jars repeatedly to re-ferment new batches (which you can do over and over).
  • You use some of your previous yogurt/kefir to make many new batches, so you don't need to reorder our starters often.
  • Our fermentation starter cultures arrive in small pouches, each containing 4 sachets, allowing you to multiply the refermenting cycles by 4.
  • The homemade option still requires that you get milk, but one large milk carton will produce quite a few homemade yogurt pots/kefir bottles. You won't need to buy all those ready-made yogurts and kefirs in the store.

Remember Reduce-Reuse-Recycle? When you ferment your own yogurt and kefir at home reusing your own jars, all those single-use pots and bottles are eliminated and waste is reduced.

For those seeking a healthy alternative to soda pop, we've got something for you too! We've developed a probiotic Kefir Soda Starter that produces a fizzy, bubbly, fun, refreshing and vibrant probiotic beverage that you can make yourself at home using thick glass brewing bottles.
